Hepatitis C

Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver, which in turn causes damage to the individual liver cells. Hepatitis C is caused by a virus (HCV). This type of viral hepatitis is different from others in an important way. Hepatitis C infection may not be completely cleared from the body, leading to chronic hepatitis. Hepatitis C is rarely symptomatic early on, and when there are symptoms they are mild and flu-like. Later in the disease, severe fatigue may occur and other severe symptoms may occur, including cirrhosis.1
